About our Activities

Scripture Union Uganda has a number of activities with our main focus being on spiritually nurturing children, youth and families in Uganda.

We have a number of activities such as School Clubs, Missions, Camps, FCBH, BRM, Trainings, VOICE and running a campsite.

Our Activities

Missions

Scripture Union Uganda staff conduct short term missions every year with the long term objective of strengthening Scripture Union work already being implemented by the Scripture Union regional office.

This is done through giving Children, young people and teachers at the schools an opportunity to hear the good news of Jesus Christ.

During the missions, ministry in the schools is done through assemblies, the Jesus film, puppet shows, music, dance and drama presentations, question and answer sessions, family visits and sharing testimonies and life skills.

The missions have over the years created more opportunities for visiting Primary and secondary schools with a focus of opening and establishing Scripture Union Clubs.The Mission team shares a message of hope in Christ based on Scripture Union Uganda’s theme for a particular year, always a Bible verse.

The team encourages the participants to develop a discipline of daily personal Bible reading and prayer and gives them an opportunity to respond to the message by making decisions for Christ.

Short Term mission teams: Scripture Union staff and volunteers often partner with short term missionaries from the around the world during missions. This is done after discussions on how to realize long term benefits in the mission being planned.

School Clubs

Scripture Union works with schools to start and support Clubs.

These are voluntary groups that meet regularly (at least once every week) to help children and youth explore God’s word and live out the Christian faith.

What is a Scripture Union club?

A Scripture Union Club is a voluntary group, which meets regularly within the school and is designed to help pupils and students to explore the Bible and live out the Christian faith.

The leaders of the club are meant to be approved both by the school Head teacher under the guidance of the club patron and by Scripture Union.

Scripture Union Uganda’s vision is to see, “children and youth, following Jesus, filled with hope and transforming the families, which will in turn lead to national transformation.”

Each club is free to develop a programme relevant and appropriate for its own circumstances and for the children and young people who attend.

However, Scripture Union often provides materials and resources to guide key components of a club program for example Bible study and Bible lessons, devotionals etc.

Support from Scripture Union: We are committed to supporting those who run Scripture Union groups in schools both prayerfully and practically.

Scripture Union staff and volunteers make it a priority to visit Scripture Union groups and to support groups through visits, training, advice and ideas. Get in touch with your regional coordinator to make inquiries or call us on +256 414 542991.

Assemblies, Rallies and Sunday Chapel Visits: Scripture Union staff members are available to take assemblies, Rallies and chapel visits in your region.

This is possible when Scripture Union workers are contacted at least a month to the planned activity.

In case Scripture Union workers are contacted on short notice, they will consider the program based on other engagements already planned for the period.

Camps

Transforming Nations – Memorable Holiday experiences.

Every school term holiday, Scripture Union Uganda organizes camps in the different regions. These camps are a great experience!

The camps are usually hosted at boarding schools in the region or the Scripture Union campsite.

If you are looking for your children and youth to have a great holiday, to learn more about God or to just have a peak spiritual experience, a Scripture Union camp has everything you need.

We have been organizing camps for children, youth and families for over 90 years. Each of our camp is unique, but they all share the Scripture Union core values.

We aim to make our camps as affordable as possible to all, including those in Uganda’s rural settings, therefore, our camps are not for profit.

FCBH (Faith Comes By Hearing)

While many of Uganda’s young people value faith as a key-part of their lives, the country that has a majority Christian population still has few people who have regular Bible engagement.

Scripture Union workers encounter children, young people and adults every year who are unable to afford a personal Bible. Other limiting factors in the schools include low literacy, children with special needs not being catered for and the absence of instruction materials.

Scripture Union Uganda is partnering with Hosanna to deliver God’s word to Uganda’s Children, youth and adults in various settings, through audio Bibles known as pro claimers.

This program is known as Faith Comes By Hearing.

The Faith Comes By hearing program is being implemented in mainly schools with Scripture Union affiliated Bible clubs and fellowships. In these, pro-claimers have been given at no cost. Since schools offer education to children and young people, the program helps children and young people listen to God’s word and take steps from what they hear such as sharing with their group, making commitments, and demonstrating what they hear and learn.

Through this, children and young people are regularly actively involved in their faith formation.

Values Orientation In Classroom Education (VOICE)

Scripture Union Uganda’s newest program, VOICE Africa, is especially designed to help churches confront the alarming moral decay in their communities by teaching weekly Biblical values classes (called Values Education Class) in the classrooms of near-by Primary and Secondary schools. Even in its early days, God has used the VEC program to bring about transformation in student’s lives, in their families, and in their communities. Under the VOICE (Values Orientation In Classroom Education) program, churches: Secures permission to teach the weekly Values Education Classes from the Head Teacher of one or more Primary and/or Secondary Schools in their community (Scripture Union Uganda can assist.) Recruit volunteer VEC teachers from their church (Vacist, church workers, unemployed, retired, etc.)Purchase the needed VEC curriculum from Scripture Union Uganda (UShs 40,000)Arrange with Scripture Union Uganda for a 2-day training for the volunteer VEC teachers. The church covers all costs; SUU facilitators conduct the training for free, however a love gift to cover their transportation costs is appreciated.

Training for children:

VEC Curriculum is available for 3 age levels:Lower Primary (LP ), Upper Primary (UP ), Secondary (S1) Components of the VEC Curriculum (6 lessons):Teachers Manual with a Music/Audio CD of correlated VEC songs, full-colour Visual Aid Book, learners‘ Pack which includes 50 copies of each of the 6 activity sheets, the correlated Bookmarks or Certificates of Participation, and 3 copies of the VEC Attendance Register. (Additional Learners’ Packs are available at UShs 15,000 each.)

VEC Modules available: Truth, Honesty, Forgiveness, Purity, Self-Control, Responsibility and Obedience, The cost of VEC Curriculum is UShs 40,000 per set.

Bible Reading Materials

The Scripture Union Uganda Literature department is responsible for producing Bible reading materials and literature. The Bible Reading Materials (Devotional materials) are in English and local languages for Adults, Children and Youth. These include; Daily Guide for Adults, Daily power for youth and Family, God and Me for children, Kisumuluzo in Luganda, Kishumuuruzo in Runyankore/Rukiga, Ekisumuruzo in Runyoro/Rutooro and Bible Reading Cards for all ages in English, Luganda, Lugbara. The department also produces a song book known as Uganda Youth Praise currently with a latest edition of 2023. Besides producing literature, it also avails wide range of Christian literature including Bibles, Children’s books, song books, prayer books and literature by local and international authors. The Department is currently run by two staff, who are supported by volunteer devotional note writers and editors as well as volunteers who assist in the printing/production, distribution, sales and marketing. Most of the activities are coordinated at the Head office in Kampala to ensure that the ministry covers the entire country. Local sale agents are available at each of the regional offices.
