Ministry in Busoga Region

Hilda Ssekitto

REGIONAL COORDINATOR - busoga region

Busoga Region is dedicated to nurturing spiritual growth and discipleship among young people in the Busoga region of Uganda.

The region operates within the framework of the global Scripture Union movement, which aims to engage young people with the Bible and help them develop a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

The primary mission of Busoga Region Scripture Union Uganda is to reach out to young people, provide them with opportunities to encounter God’s Word, and support their spiritual growth. They organize various activities and programs such as Bible studies, discipleship training, prayer gatherings, camps, and outreach initiatives to connect with young people in schools, churches, and communities throughout the Busoga region.

SU Busoga region covers Jinja, Iganga, Bugiri, Bugweri, Buyende, Kaliro, Kamuli, Luuka, Mayuge, Namayingo, Namutumba, Bukungu, and parts of Buvuma Islands.

The Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) report released on Wednesday June 2, 2021 ranked Busoga region as the poorest region in Uganda, contributing to the largest percentage (14%) of poor people in the country compared to other regions. In another report the bureau also found that the region has the highest number of children (6-13years) in employment, 45% of children 5-17 years in the region are forced to drop out of school in order to work and support their parent’s income. Stories of child prostitution and teenage pregnancy are very common to the SU workers in these districts.

Scripture Union in Busoga works with the local churches to reach out to these communities with the good news of salvation, Life Skills and Biblical Values such as Purity, Responsibility, Respect, Self-Control, Truth, Obedience, Forgiveness, And Honesty. This is done through school out reaches, missions, bible clubs in primary and high schools for discipleship, leaders conventions, annual camps every May, August, and December. A leaders’ boot camp is still being designed to reach young leaders to encourage them to take initiative and become forerunners of a positive narrative.

We are currently running a values campaign across Busoga under SU’s VOICE (Values Orientation In classroom Education) program, to see that every school in the region has a Values class, as there is such a desperate cry for Biblical Values. We hope to cover up to 30 schools per district in the coming two years.

Busoga Region organizes a variety of activities aimed at nurturing spiritual growth and discipleship among young people in the Busoga region. Here are some common activities that they may engage in:

  1. Bible Studies: Scripture Union conducts regular Bible study sessions where young people gather to explore and discuss passages from the Bible. These sessions provide an opportunity for participants to deepen their understanding of Scripture, ask questions, and engage in meaningful discussions.

  2. Discipleship Training: The organization offers discipleship training programs to equip young people with practical skills and knowledge for their Christian walk. These programs may cover topics such as prayer, evangelism, discipleship, character development, and leadership.

  3. Prayer Gatherings: Prayer gatherings are organized to create an atmosphere of worship, intercession, and seeking God’s guidance. These gatherings provide a space for young people to come together and pray for personal needs, community concerns, and global issues.

  4. Camps and Retreats: Busoga Region Scripture Union Uganda often arranges residential camps and retreats where young people can step away from their daily routines and engage in intensive spiritual activities. These events may include worship sessions, Bible teaching, team-building exercises, outdoor activities, and opportunities for personal reflection and renewal.

  5. Outreach Initiatives: The organization encourages young people to actively participate in outreach initiatives, such as community service projects, evangelistic outreaches, and missions trips. These activities aim to spread the message of Christ’s love and engage with individuals in need, both spiritually and physically.

  6. Leadership Development: Busoga Region Scripture Union Uganda invests in developing young leaders by providing training, mentoring, and practical experiences. They may organize workshops, seminars, and conferences focused on leadership development, empowering young people to lead in their schools, churches, and communities.

  7. School and Campus Ministry: The organization recognizes the importance of reaching young people in educational settings. They may conduct school assemblies, Bible clubs, and Christian events in partnership with schools and universities to engage students with the Gospel and support their spiritual growth.
